Happy (almost) summer. In New York City, the temperature is suddenly up, I received two invitations to the beach, and I just finished installing a show I’m extremely excited to invite you to: Chloë Bass: Twice Seen, my first solo exhibition with my amazing gallery, Alexander Gray Associates.
This show is many things for me: my hometown return (my last solo show in NYC was in 2019 - 2020 with the Studio Museum in Harlem). In addition to being the first show of hopefully many with my wonderful gallery, it is also my first commercial solo show ever. It marks the achievement of my desire to come back indoors after many 5 years making big things for the outside.
Finally, the show is the debut of three new series of work, at the center of which is my four-channel video project, we turn to time. I’m absolutely amazed to share that this project, my first attempt at multi-channel moving image, was recently acquired by the incredible Walker Art Center.

we turn to time will live in the gallery alongside new works on paper (printed impeccably by MC Hyland) and a new series of mirrored wall works (fabricated in partnership with New Project). All three bodies of work come from the same source: the desire to harness and interpret the world through description, to insert language into feeling but maintain complexity of experience, and to question who we are and who we can be.
I hope to see you at the opening! If you’re unable to make it out that night and want to arrange a walk-through of the exhibition (which will remain on view through July 26th), don’t hesitate to contact me. I am also available for interview requests or other forms of press.

For those of you closer to the St. Louis area, I’m doing a fun exhibition project at NON STNDRD, an amazing gallery space set within the National Building Arts Center in Sauget.
Opening June 28th, this solo exhibition, a different, better self , will consist of a site responsive installation featuring photographs and text from my series “The Parts“ combined with materials borrowed from the National Building Arts Center. If you are in St. Louis this summer, stop by and take a look. We’ll be planning an event for later in the summer, and who doesn’t want to hang out in an old bunker? Photos to come.

Finally, here are two small pieces of writing that I’ve published since the last time I sent out a newsletter:
In honor of my dear, late friend Lorraine O’Grady I wrote a piece in memoriam for Art in America. Lorraine was an incredible writer, performer, mentor, and friend, and is greatly missed. (Not to mention the conduit through which I connect with Alexander Gray, where I wish she could see my first show.) Please enjoy her memory with me.
I also published a review of Black in Blues: How a Color Tells the Story of My People (2024) by Imani Perry for Hyperallergic. I’ve never reviewed a book before!
In spite of my good news, this remains a complex year. Recently I’ve been considering the ways in which art (and visual culture more broadly) actually serve as a means of creating history — for better and for worse.
I’m looking forward to connecting my thoughts, as well as connecting with people, throughout the coming months. I’ll have a few other exciting announcements coming soon, to stay tuned.
Meanwhile, I hope you are well, and getting wiser in whatever ways you need.
Warmly,
Chloë
